Objective: Automate Manual Project Reporting

The IT division of a very large health care holding company was wrestling with a massive portfolio of projects that needed to be delivered. IT and the IT PMO had a delivery methodology and a work intake process but did not have a means to communicate project throughput and resource allocation and was faced with manually reporting on over 250 projects and upwards of 3,000 resources. IT had invested in a portfolio and project management system, which helped with execution but provided only limited executive level reporting. Senior leaders were starved for historical, high-level, information about the overall state of the IT programs.

Solution: Portfolio Central

The Operari Group engaged and quickly understood that what the client lacked was an information collection and delivery vehicle:

1. Operari representatives explained how, in this case, IT was as large as an entire company and the total IT investment was in the hundreds of millions of dollars. A collection of programs this large really needed several data warehousing and business intelligence constructs to provide executives with more usable information.
2. From this, the concept for the Portfolio Central Information repository was born and data from all over the enterprise collected and loaded, on a regular basis, into one location, a Microsoft SQL Server database.
3. A highly interactive dashboard was created using tools from Business Objects. This new solution finally allowed IT executives to communicate the status of the portfolio as a whole and quickly find and report status on any of the hundreds of projects active in the company.
